First, TBA Studios uploaded its films on YouTube for users to watch for free. Then, Ryan Cayabyab gathered musicians to livestream an online concert series. The online iteration of Lee’s famous (and free) scriptwriting workshop will take place on April 8, 15, and 22. To join, you must be a Filipino citizen and at least 18 years old. The deadline for applications is on March 27, 2020, at 11:59 p.m. Interested applicants must send a letter of intent and writer’s bio to [email protected]
So, you’ve got five days to come up with a winning application that will impress Lee.
For decades, Lee has been the first name that cinema buffs and aspiring screenwriters learn. And despite being a giant in the industry, Lee has dedicated many weekends mentoring the next generation of screenwriters through his free scriptwriting workshop where he opens his home to like-minded strangers.
Lee’s been doing this for years, and nothing, not even a lockdown, will stop that from happening.
The Ricky Lee Scriptwriting Workshop is also campaigning with the Director’s Guild of the Philippine, the Lupon ng Pilipinong Sinematographo, and the Lockdown Cinema Club to raise funds for displaced film workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and enhanced community quarantine. Like many Filipinos, many film workers follow a no-production-no-pay scheme, putting many in a tough financial position.
As such, Lee’s workshop is also encouraging good Samaritans to contribute to the livelihoods of these artists.
The online workshop will only cater to 50 lucky applicants, but it’s still worth the shot. After all, not many people can say they Skyped with Ricky Lee.
