Sony's Spider-Man Universe Is Expanding to TV Shows

Give us all the Spider-Verse content.

We’re in the Spider-Verse now. Sony is expanding its Spider-Verse into television, and multiple live-action shows are already in the works, according to Variety. Sony, which controls over 900 characters in Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, is reportedly launching Silk: Spider Society as its debut television series in the Spider-Verse franchise.

The show will be developed by showrunner Angela Kang of The Walking Dead fame, alongside Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. All three will executive produce the show with former Sony executive Amy Pascal. Silk: Spider Society will follow Cindy Moon, a Korean-American superhero in the Spider-Verse who goes by the name Silk. Moon is bit by the same spider as Spider-Man, and the show will follow her quest to find her missing family.

However, unlike Marvel’s other superhero shows, Sony’s Spider-Verse series will drop internationally on Amazon Prime Video.

Moon is just one of many Marvel characters owned by Sony, and there’s no word yet on whether other superheroes will be joining Silk: Spider Society. Sony’s Spider-Verse expansion has focused primarily on live-action films and animated films, such as Venom, Let There Be Carnage, Morbius, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The latter won the Academy Award for best animated film in 2019 and its two sequel films are expected to be released in cinemas in the summer of 2023 and 2024. Sony also teamed up with Marvel to develop the popular Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland.

While Silk: Spider Society is still in early development, two Sony Spider-Verse projects are already in post-production or wrapping up filming. Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson is expected to premiere in October 2023, while Madame Web starring Dakota Johnson will be released in early 2024.
