The enduring mystery of how a coffee cup came to be left right in front of Daenerys during the last season of Game of Thrones is up there with Murder on the Orient Express in terms of its apparent inexplicability.

Fortunately, though, Sophie Turner has been in her low-lit detective's office piecing together clues, and reckons she's cracked it at last. It's clearly a bit of a relief to her.

"I hear this every day of my life, this coffee cup thing, so it’s good to know that the coffee cup got more press than the final season altogether," Turner told Conan O'Brien on his talk show last night when he asked about it.

Turner didn't identify a specific smoking gun as such, but thanks to her detailed knowledge of her fellow cast members, the pieces fell into place quickly. It all comes down to the presumed litter-bugging tendencies of one Kit Harington.

"The coffee cup was where Kit's chair was. First I blamed it on Emilia [Clarke], but I don’t think Emilia would do that.

“Kit is lazy and I think he would have done that. It was in front of Kit’s chair and then obviously he moved and this picture was taken and it looked like it was in my seat, but I wasn’t there."

Then came the coup de grâce, that satisfying moment when Poirot wiggles his moustache and turns to the group gathered in the drawing room to very pointedly call the guilty party "mon ami" before the camera pans round to a suddenly furious-looking local postmaster.

"It was Kit," she said. "It was 100 per cent Kit."

Mystery solved.
