This Extremely Dark Star Wars Theory Explains What Really Happened to Rey's Parents

Things could get pretty grim in Episode IX.

Even though Kylo Ren clearly told Rey that her parents were just some long-dead drunks in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, many fans refuse to believe that's the truth. Since the movie was released nearly a year ago, they've come up with a number of theories that could explain the true identity of her parents.

Perhaps the darkest theory is this one posted on Reddit, suggesting Rey killed her own parents.

Was just watching TLJ last night and caught a line I hadn’t seen anyone mention, Kylo talking about Rey’s parents: “they’re dead in a paupers’ grave in the jakku dessert.” Now, he’s sure implying that with a lot of certainty, but as far as we know, the last Rey saw of her parents was them flying away in a ship (if that WAS her parents in that ship and not someone else)... how does Kylo know that they are dead?

Well, maybe one of the big twists in episode IX is that Rey pulled that ship down with the force (a theory I have seen elsewhere, not my original idea) she blocked it out, but now that she has met Kylo, she realizes she also killed her parents and is not so different than him, this is part of what brings them closer in TLJ, but we are not made privy to this detail of their memory exchange.

Very fucked up for what is essentially a children's movie!

But as ridiculous as this might sound, there is some evidence to support it. As the theory notes, why would her last memories of her parents be of them flying away if they're dead in a grave? Why would they just vanish unexpectedly?

It's also worth noting key details about the two big conversations with Rey's parents. In the aforementioned scene with Kylo Ren, he begins by telling Rey: "You know the truth. Say it." In another scene with Maz Kanata in The Force Awakens, she tells Rey: "I see in your eyes. You already know the truth. Whomever you're waiting for on Jakku they're not coming back."

A new theory about the death of Rey’s parents in Star Wars centers around a conversation she had with Kylo Ren. The theory is that Rey killed her parents, which could serve to bring her closer to Kylo Ren.

On every occasion, people tell her that she already knows the truth, as if she's blocking out or refusing to believe what actually happened to her parents. If it's something so traumatic, that she accidentally used the Force to crash their ship, then perhaps she's suppressed that memory throughout her life.

Sure, it doesn't resolve the fans' burning desire to have every character connected to the same family tree, but it does provide an unexpected twist to Rey's character.
