Everything You Need to Know About the New Superman & Lois Series
Who’s your favorite Superman? Is it the beloved Christopher Reeve of the Superman movies of the ’80s? Is it Dean Cain of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman in the ’90s TV series? Could it be Brandon Routh in Superman Returns of 2006? Or is it Tom Welling in the 10-season run of Smallville in the 2000s? Or is it the most recent silver screen Superman, Henry Cavill, who donned the cape in Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League?
Who is the Superman in the new Superman & Lois series?
How about someone else? Because you can’t get enough of the original superhero, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television have decided to give us a new series to follow, Superman & Lois, with a new-ish Superman actor, Tyler Hoechlin.
The 33-year-old Hoechlin, who is not new to the cape, having played Superman in the popular Arrow-verse on television, makes parallels about wearing the Superman suit and playing the iconic role: “Just as this suit is unique and set apart from the ones that preceded it, the story we’re telling about Clark/Superman at this point in his life is unique and something we’ve never seen before. I appreciate the opportunity to wear the suit and the responsibility that comes with it.”
What is Superman & Lois about?
Short version: A superhero tries to live a quiet life but he just can’t because that’s not good TV.
Okay, the official plot goes like this: Leaving behind their saving-the-world days, Clark Kent and Lois Lane return to Smallville “to handle some Kent family business.” On top of that, Clark and Lois also “come face to face with one of their greatest challenges ever—dealing with all the stress, pressures, and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society.”
The couple’s headaches will stem partly from whether or not their two boys will exhibit Kryptonian superpowers as they grow up. Apart from this very special anxiety and the complication of a host of characters from the past like Lana Lang, Clark’s first love, their quest for a smaller life is “…upended when both a mysterious stranger and impassioned self-made mogul Morgan Edge enter their lives.”
Who else stars in Superman & Lois?
Playing the journalist Lois Lane is actress Elizabeth Tulloch, who previously played the role in the Arrow-verse. “I find Lois inspiring in how little she gives a crap about what anyone thinks of her. She’s not doing the work for glory or more Pulitzers, she’s doing it because she believes in justice and truth,” Tulloch says. “She is incredibly driven and determined and hard-working, and she really embodies the aphorism, ‘be the change you wish to see in the world.’”
As their sons, Jonathan and Jordan, are actors Jordan Elsass and Alexander Garfin, respectively. Meanwhile, Lana Lang is played by Emmanuelle Chriqui, the stranger is Wolé Parks, and Morgan Edge is Adam Rayner.
What should we know about the updated Superman suit?
According to Warner Bros, the new suit “has a classic, timeless vibe” that recalls Superman figures of the past but it has also been updated with “techniques and applications.” Designer Laura Jean Shannon of Supersuits made sure to emphasize the billowing movement of the cape by focusing on a new neckline. Watch out for a streamlined muscle structure, updated paint job, and a sculpted armored belt, too.
