The 'Avengers' Directors Just Tweeted A Mysterious Glowing Thing, And Marvel Fans have Some Theories

Shooting for Avengers 4 has apparently wrapped, and directors Joe and Anthony Russo have taken to the next stage of the Marvel cinematic cycle: winding up fans with non sequiturs and cryptic Twitter posts.

On Saturday, the Russo brothers tweeted this:

But what is it? The first wave of attempts to understand the picture used some underwhelming Photoshop tweaking in an attempt to sort out exactly what that glowing thing is. They weren't very helpful.

However, some other, less confused theories have been put forward. Marvel fans are good at theories: there was the one about how Ant-Man and the Wasp explains how all the heroes will come back to life, why Thanos wasn't really the one who killed everyone, and how the X-Men and Fantastic Four will be introduced. Here are a few more.

It's a proton cannon.

War Machine's been tinkering away with the ludicrously powerful weapon for a little while now, and it was at Avengers HQ in Infinity War. Speculation that it'll appear in Avengers 4 ramped up after another cryptic set picture released last month appeared to show the cannon hiding in plain sight.

It's Adam Warlock.

The arrival of Adam, a super-powerful golden-skinned cosmic being originally inspired by Jesus Christ Superstar, was hinted at in a post-credits sequence after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. In the comics, he's central to sorting out Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet. So, for a lot of fans, this looked like the pod or cradle which created him. However, the Russo brothers have already said that Adam's not going to be in Avengers 4. "I have no interest as a director in telling a story that's already been told or in seeing one that's already been told," Joe said.

It's Iron Man's boot.

Some people have been staring at this picture for so long that they reckon you can see the hinges on Iron Man's boot somewhere in this completely unintelligible flare of blue light. They're very probably wrong.

It's Thanos being arrested.

Woah there, galaxy-brain. That picture of the bloke in the costume being arrested isn't from the set. That's an actual bloke in a costume being actually arrested in Toronto several months ago.
