The Dead Don't Die Is the Most Star-Studded Zombie Movie Ever
Some people think we're living in a new era of "elevated horror," but we've long been in a Prestige Zombie Era. The Walking Dead just wrapped its ninth season on AMC (and its spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead's fifth season begins this summer). We've also got Zombieland: Double Tap, the sequel to the 2009 zombie comedy, arriving in theaters this fall. Five decades after George A. Romero's groundbreaking horror film Night of the Living Dead, the undead show no signs of stopping their gruesome, flesh-eating march across the Earth—in entertainment, at least.
Just as horror movies at large are becoming a respectable genre, zombie movies are now getting the auteur treatment. Just consider The Dead Don't Die, the new film from acclaimed indie director Jim Jarmusch, which lands in theaters June 14. Featuring some of his frequent performers—Adam Driver, Bill Murray, Chloë Sevigny, and Tilda Swinton lead the all-star cast—the horror-comedy follows the residents of a quirky small town whose lives are turned upside-down when a zombie apocalypse strikes.
Driver, Murray, and Sevigny play a trio of befuddled police officers who must prepare to do battle against the undead, while Swinton is an inexplicably Scottish and sword-wielding mortician who joins the cause. Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Caleb Landry Jones, Rosie Perez, Tom Waits, RZA, and Selena Gomez (!) round out the cast of possible zombie victims, while Iggy Pop and Carol Kane appear as zombified versions of their hilarious selves (with Kane's monster slurring a demand for Chardonnay, either because she's dead, drunk, or possibly both).
