The Final Stranger Things Trailer Teased a New Villain for Season Three
The first trailer for the 1985-set third season of Netflix’s Stranger Thingslet fans get hyped on '80s nostalgia, with its glimpses of boomboxes, spandex-heavy aerobic classes, and fanny packs—back when people used to wear them around their waists. But with the release of the final trailer before the new season makes its Fourth of July debut, we get to see a lot more of the scary side of Hawkins, Indiana, and the action that awaits our heroes in season three.
The Mind Flayer is back, and the trailer teases a frighting new iteration of the villain. "What if he never left?" asks Will. "What if we locked him out here with us? He’d want to attach himself to someone again—a new host." Will himself was possessed by the smoke monster in season two, so he probably knows what he’s talking about. And in this trailer we see Max’s cruel older brother Billy with black tendrils filling the whites of his eyes, suggesting that this time, Billy is the Mind Flayer’s flavor of the month. “We’re going to end you, we’re going to end your friends, then we’re going to end everyone,” intones the monster in a voiceover.
The official Netflix Stranger Things 3 synopsis hints at the scary turn of events, too. Here it is:
It’s 1985 in Hawkins, Indiana, and summer’s heating up. School’s out, there’s a brand new mall in town, and the Hawkins crew are on the cusp of adulthood. Romance blossoms and complicates the group’s dynamic, and they’ll have to figure out how to grow up without growing apart. Meanwhile, danger looms. When the town’s threatened by enemies old and new, Eleven and her friends are reminded that evil never ends; it evolves. Now they’ll have to band together to survive, and remember that friendship is always stronger than fear.
The trailer and the synopsis both suggest that a good chunk of the action takes place at the mall, which can only mean one glorious thing—we should be in for lots of Steve and his fantastic ice cream parlor uniform.
