Tobey Maguire Is Up For Another Superhero Role: "I'll Just Do Whatever"

Tobey Maguire hasn't acted on screen since 2014 - and as far as we know, he hasn't done any acting behind closed doors either - but the former Spider-Man says that he could potentially be tempted back for another superhero role.

"I just don't really have an 'I would or wouldn't do' mindset," he equivocated the Hollywood Reporter. "I'll just do whatever… whatever it is that comes that I feel called to, that may or may not fit in any kind of box."

Even for a man you assume would be difficult to pin down over whether he minded having Typhoo rather than Twinings ("I don't really have an 'I would drink or wouldn't drink' mindset... I'll drink whatever hot beverage it is that comes that I feel called to, whether that's Ovaltine or Bovril or hot water with lemon in") that's a bit of a wiffly answer. But has he retired?

"Have I retired?" he said, doing a small laugh. "I'll do what I feel called to do. I suspect I'll be excited when I do it. Like, just whenever the calling appears, I guess."

Right. But what did you reckon to the other Spider-Men, Tobey? Surely you've had some thoughts?

"I haven't seen all of them," Maguire said. "What I've seen, I've appreciated. I like both of the actors a ton. I think they're both super talented."

Perhaps concerned that he'd accidentally outlined an opinion, Maguire added: "I would just say I appreciated them and I like the actors, I like the choices."

Hmm. Elsewhere in the interview, Maguire says he's spent a fair bit of his time playing pickleball, a sport which takes elements of tennis and badminton and entails hitting a perforated plastic ball with large wooden paddles over a net. It's adult-scale table tennis, basically, and it sounds very, very much like the kind of thing you do when you're functionally retired.
