Tom Hanks Revealed the Secret of How He Avoids Dropping Toy Story 4 Spoilers
Actors sit for interview after interview while promoting a film or TV show, and considering the sheer number of folks grilling them, it's pretty impressive how rarely they let spoilers slip. But in an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Thursday, Tom Hanks offered a glimpse at how stars are able to keep confidential info under wraps while promoting a project—they’ve got cheat sheets.
"I have these talking points that Disney gives you at the beginning of the press junket thing," said Hanks, who’s in the midst of his Toy Story 4 press tour. He then produced several folded-up pieces of paper. "And these things are like Gutenberg Bible stuff, I mean look at how many times I’ve studied ‘em," he said. "I spilled some tomato juice on it at one point at breakfast the other day."
"These are things you’re supposed to say, or not supposed to say?" Kimmel asked.
"Both, my friend, both," Hanks replied, before reading from the "Spoilers/What to Avoid" section of his notes, redacting secrets as he went along.
One of the things he is supposed to say concerns Toy Story's Bo Peep, who was given a redesign that found her abandoning her original pink dress for a pair of blue bloomers. Disney instructed Hanks to emphasize in interviews that, even in her pastel petticoat days, Bo was "a strong character...her recent experience perhaps made her stronger, but she was never a weak character."
"Do you know how many executives right now want to kick my ass because I brought this out?" Hanks asked.
