Uncharted has just arrived in Philippine cinemas and if you caught the movie during opening weekend, you were definitely left with a couple of questions.

Inspired by the video game of the same name, the film brings Nathan Drake, played by Tom Holland, and Victor "Sully" Sullivan, played by Mark Wahlberg, to the big screen as they seek a multi-billion-dollar treasure lost during Ferdinand Magellan's expedition.

Those who know their history know that the Portuguese explorer's story ends in the Philippines, specifically with the Battle of Mactan. And, around there is where the globe-trotting treasure-hunting adventure took Drake and Sullivan. That leads to the number-one, most important question any Filipino could ask: Where, exactly, was Uncharted filmed?

Principal photography took place in Spain and other parts of Europe.

The initial shooting started on March 16, 2020 in Babelsberg Studios outside Berlin, Germany. With the pandemic, however, filming was almost immediately halted only to resume in July 2020. Aside from Germany, Spain and its cities Barcelona, Alicante, and Valencia acted as filming locations for the movie.

The Philippine scenes were actually filmed in the Mediterranean Sea.

When the film travels to the Philippines, the characters end up in Kiamba, Sarangani. The municipality is famously known as the hometown of Manny Pacquiao's wife Jinkee. But, the scenes were really filmed in Spain where the coastal town of Costa Brava acted as the stand-in for the Philippines.

The Sa Boadella cove in Lloret del Mar was transformed into a luxury resort, while digital shots of Palawan were used for the background.

There's a reason the scenes couldn't be filmed in its actual setting.

Production was supposed to film in the Philippines, but COVID-19 travel and filming restrictions thwarted the plans. In an interview with GMA News, Holland said he "would have loved to come and shoot in the Philippines" if it weren't so tricky right now. Instead, a small crew visited to film the coastline in order to digitally recreate it for the big screen.
