You Could Win P1 Million Just By Writing a Song
The 2020 Philpop Songwriting Festival is looking for the next generation of songwriters, and organizers will turn the best one into an instant millionaire.
P1 million will go to the grand champion of the songwriting tilt if your song is picked as the best by a judging panel composed of some of the country’s best and brightest musical names.
The runner-up will get P500,000 and the second runner-up gets P250,000.
The judges of this year’s edition of the competition, an offshoot of the defunct Metropop Music Festival, will pick three entries each from five areas or clusters nationwide—Metro Manila, South Luzon, North Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
The top 15 songs will then work with major label partner Warner Music Philippines as they and compete in the final rounds, which will be held on November 14, 2020.
Since 2012, Philpop has championed the innate musical talent of Filipinos by recognizing outstanding songwriters. This year, though, the competition wants to break boundaries and aim for international recognition, especially in the Asia Pacific region.
This goal is one reason Philpop partnered with Warner Music Philippines this year.
“The value that we bring to this equation, especially connected to the fact that it’s about (the competition tagline of) #MusicBreakingBorders, is that we are an international major record label,” said Ian Monsod, managing director of Warner Music Philippines, during the online press conference announcing the start of the competition this year. “We do have a network of A&R and marketing people all around the world. In terms of judging and production process, we’ll bring that unique value of this presence to the project. We share this ambition to elevate the Filipino artist to a global stage. It’s a difficult path, but I think with our partnership, we can improve the odds.”
Philpop also wanted to extend its reach and find talent outside Metro Manila.
“When we had a major pivot in 2018, the first thing that we did is to make the festival biennial,” said Dinah Remolacio, PhilPop Music Fest Foundation executive director. “In between those years, we mounted all these songwriting workshops in different parts of the country to empower other songwriters in the region, so that they could submit entries to PhilPop. We want to diversify the winning entries in every festival.”
“From mounting songwriting festivals every two years, PhilPop Foundation has expanded its influence and range of activities by including boot camps across the country and now publisher of original content for use in albums, commercials and movies,” added Ryan Cayabyab, National Artist and PhilPop Music Fest Foundation board member and bootcamp master.
Previous editions of Philpop over the years have produced winning entries from songwriters like Miguel and Paolo Guico (Ben & Ben), Johnoy Danao, Jazz Nicolas, Davey Langit, Thyro Alfaro and Yumi Lacsamana, and Jungee Marcelo.
Submission of entries for the 2020 Philpop Songwriting Festival is ongoing until July 4, 2020. For more details on how to join, feel free to register online via their official website. The MVP Group is the major sponsor of the competition.
