Lea Salonga Honored With Time's TIME100 Impact Award

According to TIME, Salonga is a "life-long role model for kids of color."

In a career that spans four decades, Lea Salonga is undeniably one of the greatest talents the country has ever produced. She's performed all over the world's biggest stages, even winning a Tony Award back in 1989. Now, the singer adds another accolade to her list, as TIME magazine names her to its Impact Awards.

The 2022 TIME100 Impact Awards recently recognized Salonga as one of the "visionaries who have gone above and beyond to make an impact and move their respective industries forward."

Journalist Sanya Mansoor wrote of the former Miss Saigon star: "Salonga has emerged as not only a Disney and Broadway icon, but a role model for children of color. Salonga prides herself on promoting representation in Hollywood and on Broadway, and showing underrepresented groups that their stories matter."

The singer also talked to Mansoor about her earliest memories of Disney. She remembers hearing the Cinderella song "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" in her youth. Two decades later, she would go on voice for both Jasmine and Mulan.

Salonga got her start in the theater at the age of seven, starring in a Filipino production of The Lion King and I. In 1989, she won a Tony Award for her performance in Miss Saigon. Three years later, she would go on to play Eponine in Les Misérables on Broadway, the first Asian woman to do so.

In recent years, she has done musical productions like Sweeney Todd and even appeared as Elodie Honrada in HBO MAX's Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.

She joins awardees like Iranian-American computational geneticist Dr. Pardis Sabeti and British-Indian actress Alia Bhatt, among others. Salonga, together with the rest of the recipients, will be honored in a ceremony at National Gallery Singapore in October 2022.
