New Data Tells Us Just How Much Filipinos Love ‘Despacito’

If you are what you Google, then most of us are a raunchy Puerto Rican song.

Google’s Year in Search feature for 2017 is finally live, and the results have a lot to say about Filipinos and what we use the Internet for. Several interesting hypotheses can be drawn from the data that Google provides, but there’s one thing we know for sure: we loved Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito”.

The Latin banger—which became the most viewed YouTube video in history last August, and has 4.5 billion views as of this writing—is at the top of our overall searches, followed shortly by Bruno Mars’ “Versace on The Floor." Of course.

It’s also interesting to note that out of our top 10 overall search topics, half are music-related: four are songs and one is a musical reality show. Of course, we’re not even counting Xander Ford, who, by some stretch of the imagination, could also be a music-related search topic.

Our Year in Search also shows a specific list of the songs and lyrics we Googled in 2017. There’s only one local song among them: “Titibo-tibo” by Moira Dela Torre, which won ABS-CBN’s Himig Handog 2017. It’s a catchy song, but one whose newfound popularity is a little unsettling, given the problematic gender politics in its lyrics (but that’s an issue that deserves a separate angry thinkpiece).

Looking at it from the bigger picture, Google’s Year in Search shows how much Filipinos love music, which itself is not surprising. What it says about our specific musical preferences, on the other hand, is much more interesting food for thought.
