SB19 Has Dethroned BTS and Just Made Billboard Chart History
Filipino boy band SB19 have made history after their song “Bazinga” made it to number one in the Billboard Hot Trending Songs chart on Tuesday (December 7). The chart, which tracks global music trends on Twitter in real time, nudged global sensation BTS off the top spot, which the South Korean boyband has held since the chart was first introduced in October.
This is the first time SB19 has topped any Billboard chart, although the group had previously made it to the top 10 of Social 50’s weekly and yearend charts. It’s also the first time that any group has topped the Hot Trending Songs chart other than BTS.
According to Billboard, “Bazinga,” which was at number 8 in the chart last week, had about 1.5 million Twitter mentions in the tracking week, increasing about 67 percent in the time period. No doubt there was a marked increase in Twitter mentions of SB19’s song after they performed it at the Awit Awards last November 29. The group was nominated for four awards and won one for People’s Voice Favorite Song for Hanggang sa Huli.
Billboard says what’s different about the Hot Trending Songs chart is that it tracks what songs people are talking about, and not necessarily what they’re listening to.
South Korean superstars BTS had held on to number one in the Hot Trending Song charts for the last seven weeks of its existence. They were the first act to top that specific chart with “Permission to Dance,” and then replaced it with another single, the global hit “Butter.” The group currently has three songs in the top 10: “Butter” at No. 2, “Permission to Dance” at No. 3, and “Dynamite” at No. 9.
SB19 is a Filipino five-piece boy band composed of members Josh, Pablo, Stell, Ken, and Justin. They were formed in 2016 and have become one of the foremost proponents of Pinoy pop or P-pop and were recently nominated for Best Southeast Asian Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
