Malasimbo. The word conjures images of a mountain retreat, an idyllic tropical paradise, and, for a lot of people, partygoers in their summer-best and world-class live music.

Now on its ninth year, the Malasimbo Festival has become a pilgrimage of sorts for thousands of fans who make the trek to the mountain in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro to witness a truly unique celebration of arts and music. What was once a small get-together of passionate and free-spirited individuals has grown into one of the country’s biggest and most anticipated festivals.

This year, organizers announced some major changes to Malasimbo, foremost of which is the venue. Instead of the natural amphitheater where the festival has been held since the beginning, audiences will enjoy the festivities at a private nature reserve park just off White Beach in Puerto Galera. That means: no more 20-minute jeepney ride from the beach to get to the festivities.

Organizers promise a venue that features “breathtaking nature, wild jungle, a virgin beach, and postcard-worthy sunset views.”

There will also be a bigger camp facility, new stages and different terrains for visual artists, musicians and festivalgoers at the new venue.

Malasimbo organizers added that they are set to bring back the “Malasimboat” parties as well as set up a new DJ stage and a Silent Disco stage.
