The School of Life Offers "Porn As Therapy"

Porn as Therapy offers "remedies" for the ills of the modern world.

Over the years, porn has been vilified for being exploitative, contributing to rape culture, and, according to this Tedx Talk, causing erectile dsyfunction. In spite of this, the London-based School of Life—which is committed to helping people develop their emotional intelligence through culture and art—believes that porn can be therapeutic.

Their website Porn As Therapy seeks to create a "'better’ sort of pornography, ‘better’ meaning not more or less explicit or unusual, but more aligned with the highest capacities of humankind: intelligence, sensitivity and empathy. It is porn we shouldn’t have to be ashamed of."

The site's format is similar to their Books as Therapy and Art as Therapy sites—select the issue you identify with the most, and you'll be redirected to a "cure." Porn as Therapy offers remedies for loneliness, authority, seriousness, and responsibility.

The content itself is rather like a picture book for adults. Unlike mainstream porn, there's so much exposition and context, it's almost funny. For example, "porn for loneliness" goes into tons of detail about Chris's interest in solving Africa's problems with poverty. He meets Elin, a bright woman who's equally concerned with social justice, online. While we're all for context, the pacing of the story is so slow that you'll probably wind up skimming or skipping it.

Once the couple finally starts to get into the act, the narrative is interspersed with psychological analyses like: "What makes ‘dirty’ things erotic is their meaning. The permission to be disgusting with another person; to abandon all the usual restraint and conventions, are tokens of love. Because we are so often forced to be ‘good’ and to hide our more urgent physical desires, the encouragement to call someone a cock-sucker, a bitch or a brute are symbols of complete acceptance. ‘Come over my fucking tits,’ she tells him - this between two people who had been strangers a few hours ago, and for whom this sperm is taking on a role of a supreme and noble token of trust."

While The School of Life appears to have good intentions, their execution falls a little flat. Perhaps their psychologists would do well to collaborate with erotic fiction writers.
