Attention, Game Developers! Apple Wants You for Its Apple Arcade

Apple Arcade is the world’s first game subscription service.

If you've developed a mobile game but don't have the means to release it yet, listen up.

American tech giant Apple created lots of buzz after it unveiled four new services during the company’s keynote event earlier this week. Among the services mentioned was Apple Arcade, a game subscription service that will be available toward the latter part of the year.

It’s still a few months ahead of its official launch but the multinational tech company is already looking for developers interested in working with Apple.

“We’re looking for games that redefine games. If you’re working on a groundbreaking, unreleased game and would like it to be considered for Apple Arcade, we’d love to hear from you,” Apple wrote on its official website.

The company plans to feature over 100 new and exclusive games during the service's initial release, but it said it will also introduce new titles regularly. All games will be available offline and several will have support for game controllers.

“Apple is not just handpicking the games in Apple Arcade, but also contributing to the development costs and working closely with creators to bring the games to life,” the company said.

How will Apple Arcade work?

Instead of paying for every game up front, Apple Arcade subscribers will be able to try out as many games as they please. They will also be entitled to experience the full content of every game, including updates, without having to pay for additional features—thus limiting the risk of buyer’s remorse.

“Apple Arcade games will be great for families, respect user privacy, and will not have ads or require any additional purchases,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing.

The games will be available across different Apple products, making it possible for users to switch between devices and pick up where they left off. They will also be available in more than 150 countries from a new tab on the App Store across iOS, macOS, and tvOS.

Opportunity for developers

App developers have had more opportunities to showcase their craft in recent years. Google, for example, has been hosting apps from third-party developers from all over the world on its platform since 2017. The multinational tech company has also recently announced Google Stadia, its new cloud gaming platform.

Apple Arcade’s idea is similar. It will not only provide better service to its consumers, but will also offer a platform for developers worldwide—be they indie studios, major studios, or even solo programmers.

The difference, however, is that Google’s system limits the apps’ reach to individual downloads (as of now), while Apple Arcade promises to showcase its games to its over one billion gaming customers.

Developers who will be chosen will get the opportunity to stand among legendary creators and their games, including Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy), Ken Wong (Monument Valley), and Will Wright (The Sims).

Other developers already part of the service include Annapurna Interactive, Bossa Studios, Cartoon Network, Finji, Giant Squid, Klei Entertainment, Konami, LEGO, Mistwalker Corporation, SEGA, Snowman, and ustwo games.

Apple Arcade will be a good source of income, too: Apple revealed that the App Store drives the app economy and “has earned $120 billion for developers worldwide.”
