Facebook and Instagram rolled out a new feature Wednesday that sounds like a real nightmare for everyone obsessed with Facebook and Instagram. Called "Your Activity" under the settings menu on Instagram and "Your Time on Facebook" under Facebook's settings, it tracks how much time users spend on each app every day. In other words, it counts exactly how much life you're throwing away.

As CNN reports, the feature is part of Facebook's attempt to make itself a more meaningful use of time. (Facebook owns Instagram.) Back in January, Mark Zuckerberg (of recent bad fortunes) wrote on Facebook, "One of our big focus areas for 2018 is making sure the time we all spend on Facebook is time well spent."

The features have some flaws. They're only available on the main apps, not including Messenger or IGTV. They don't track on desktop or across devices, so you'll have to do some mental math if you're switching between a tablet and phone. And the counter doesn't store data after a week, so you can't judge your usage trends over time.

However, you can select a cut-off time each day and get a push notification when you reach the limit as a nudge to close the apps. Or, even better, put your phone down altogether.

Supposedly, this will make your Facebook and Instagram experiences better. And here we thought the time most well spent on Facebook or Instagram would be no time at all.
