A Leica isn’t for everyone. It doesn’t need to be. Don’t put it on a tripod. Don’t attach a lens the length of a baby’s arm. Its purpose isn’t to take impressive holiday pictures. Nikons and Canons already do a great job of producing sweeping holiday photos befitting your computer’s desktop picture. From the very instant you pick up the camera you are inspired to look past the obvious choice in your viewfinder, and capture truly unique moments. This is where the camera’s strength lies. But, the new Leica M10 doesn’t just feel like a great camera, it backs up the M series’ beautiful retro look with a number of improved features.

Let’s look at it from different angles:

With a slim top-plate depth of under 34 mm, the M10 fits nicely in your hands, ideal for when you or your subject are on the move. The latest M series model manages to incorporate a 24-megapixel full-frame sensor in its compact body, which feels substantial yet light. ISO sensitivity has been significantly expanded to enhance imaging capability even in difficult lighting conditions, and the ISO dial itself has been placed conveniently on the left. For the first time, all shooting parameters are now placed on the top plate, making it easier to compose photos.

The M10’s improved rangefinder presents another sweet upgrade, delivering a field of view that’s 30% larger than before, and providing significant eye relief as well. The German camera maker also simplified the screen’s navigational menu and reduced the number of buttons. There’s a particular joy in handling a vintage-inspired camera, and the M10 charms with its clean, well-organized design.

What you see is what you get. And what you get is a classic Leica camera that’s received a meaningful update. Unfortunately, what you don’t get is a lens, which you’ll need to purchase separately. Consider the right lens part of a worthwhile long-term investment.

The Leica M10 is available at Leica stores in Greenbelt 5 and EDSA Shangri-La Plaza Mall.
