The Nintendo Switch is a huge hit. We knew that already, but what we don't know is just how much of a success it is in numbers. New reports, however, have revealed just how big it is in Japan.

According to data from Famitsu/Kadokawa, Nintendo sold six million units of the Switch in Japan just last year. What's even more astonishing is the fact that 500,000 of that was all thanks to sales during December alone. In total, the Nintendo Switch made up 87 percent of Japan's console sales last year.

The comprehensive game information media company's study adds: "The size of [Japan's] home video game market in 2020 was 376.38 billion yen. Driven by Nintendo Switch, the hardware and software market increased year-on-year for the first time in three years."

Whew. Not even the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S slow the Nintendo Switch down.

But, not only is the Switch a success in Japan, it's also managed to take over the Philippines. An earlier study by the iPrice Group found that the Switch is far and away the most popular gaming console in the Philippines. The Nintendo console is also number one in four other countries in the region—Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

In other news, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is currently the second best-selling game for the Switch. See the full list of the Nintendo Switch's best-selling games (so far) here.
