Climb Mountains and Explore the World with This Virtual Fitness App
Most of us will never climb Mount Everest or hike the entire Pacific Crest Trail. Heck, some of us find it difficult to even get off the couch. And the fact that the pandemic prevents us from traveling abroad doesn’t exactly help. But with The Conqueror app, you can virtually climb famous mountains and iconic trails from around the world, all from the comfort of your home.
As far as exercise motivation apps go, The Conqueror is pretty enticing. Here’s how it works: Whenever you do any distance-based workout such as walking, running, cycling, or rowing, you can log the distance you’ve “traveled” on the app until you reach the finish line. Tracking your miles is easy—all you have to do is sync The Conqueror app to your favorite smartwatch or fitness app. We never had a favorite fitness app to begin with, so we used Apple Health.
Once you finish the challenge, The Conquer Virtual Challenges will send you a shiny medal. And looking at these medals’ intricate designs, we definitely wouldn’t mind displaying them in our own homes.
But as they say, it’s all about the journey, not the destination. Along the way, you can view your virtual surroundings using Google Street View, which is integrated into the app. As you tap through the streets you’ve passed, it’s easy to feel like you’ve actually walked through the forests surrounding Mt. Fuji or biked past the vineyards of Tuscany.
Once you reach certain milestones, you’ll get virtual postcards that include trivia and information about important landmarks. Plus, every time you complete 20 percent of the challenge, The Conqueror Virtual Challenges will plant a real tree in partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects. Getting fit and helping Mother Nature? Sounds like a win-win situation to us.
If you miss running actual marathons and want to simulate the experience of doing a long-distance run, you can opt for an apparel + medal package and it’ll mail you a shirt at the start of the challenge, as well as your medal once you reach the finish line.
The pace is completely up to you. It doesn’t matter if you’re a sedentary person who’s struggling to reach 10,000 steps or a seasoned runner. All you need to do is set the timeframe in which you expect to finish the challenge. Let’s say life happens and you miss a workout or two—you can adjust the timeframe at any point in the challenge. You can opt to do the challenge individually or form a team with your friends to reach the finish line faster. There’s also a Facebook group for people doing the challenges to post about their progress and cheer each other on.
If distance-based workouts aren’t your thing, The Conqueror Virtual Challenges website has a nifty conversion chart you can use to log practically any kind of exercise in the app. When we say anything, we mean anything—“washing a car” is included in the chart.
As of this writing, The Conqueror offers 20 virtual challenges, and they’ve been consistently adding new ones over the past few months. There are iconic mountains and fitness challenges such as Mount Kilimanjaro, the English Channel, and the Appalachian Trail. Whether you’re of a religious bent or just want to see beautiful scenery, the St. Francis Way and Camino de Santiago pilgrimages will be right up your alley. There’s a plethora of tourist destinations like the Giza Pyramids, Inca Trail, The Great Ocean Road, Kruger Park, and Hadrian’s Wall.
You can opt to buy one challenge, get a starter pack that includes The Inca Trail, the English Channel, and Hadrian’s Wall, or buy sets that include any five to 15 challenges at a discounted price. Buying more than one challenge might seem a bit too much at first, but trust us—in our experience, it’s easy to get hooked and start collecting medals. If ever you enjoy your first challenge and are raring to start the next one, don’t make the same mistake we did. In our experience, The Conqueror will e-mail you a discount coupon for your next challenge a few hours after you’ve reached the finish line on the previous one. So make sure to wait for that coupon before ordering the next one!
In this pandemic, we’re all looking for ways to go beyond the confines of our homes and cities. And whether you’re a couch potato or a fitness buff, The Conqueror app is a great way to make your daily workouts more interesting while virtually traveling the world.
