This Tiny Lightsaber is The Novelty Lighter You Didn’t Know You Needed

Are Jedi even allowed to smoke?

Today in eccentric and weirdly elaborate Kickstarter campaigns: A Malaysian design group is seeking your help to mass-produce the LighterSaber, which is exactly what you think it is.

Expedio Design has prototyped a small lightsaber replica that functions as a cigarette lighter. It’s a little under five inches tall, is made of zinc alloy, has a single-nozzle jet flame, and—perhaps best of all—comes with built-in lightsaber sound effects, which go off every time it’s lit. That’ll let everyone in the smoking area know how much you love Star Wars.

According to the LighterSaber’s Kickstarter page, it took a whopping three years to develop the prototype, so you get the sense that this isn’t just a run-of-the-mill, throwaway novelty. "Our toughest challenge was making the prototype look and feel like a LighterSaber should," Expedio said in a release. "It wasn’t easy to create a unique yet practical, everyday product that isn’t only well-designed but extremely easy to use and carry." They even shared the concept art and 3D rendering, which are all pretty intense for something so small and seemingly trivial:

To its credit, the LighterSaber actually looks fairly practical. It even has that small protective barrier to cover the flame. And we’d be lying if we said we didn’t think that the sound effect wasn’t even just a little cool. Of course, the LighterSaber isn’t precisely modeled after any specific lightsaber in the Star Wars movies—it just looks like a cross between Anakin’s and Obi-Wan’s lightsabers. But nevertheless, it’s a pretty cool trinket for fans of the saga.

Expedio Design is accepting pledges for the LighterSaber project via Kickstarter until February 8, 2018. Visit its Kickstarter page to learn more.
