Bottoms Up: Mix This Refreshing Take on the Classic Americano at Home
The mixologist of Blind Pig, the speakeasy that started it all, gives your drink a lift.

First served in Milan, Italy in the 1860s, the Americano cocktail combines the sweet, aromatic flavor of vermouth and the bitter notes of Campari. Initially called the “Milano-Torino,” the cocktail became so popular with pre-Prohibition American tourists that it quickly took on the name “Americano.” It is an iconic Italian cocktail that has taken the world’s tastebuds by storm and is a mainstay on the menus of many a cocktail bar.
Few things are as pleasurable as kicking back with a smooth Americano after a long day of work. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a night of leisurely reading or video chatting with friends. But once in a while, it’s good to put a modern twist on a classic, which is why mixologist Joey Cerdinia of Blind Pig is proud to debut his newest creation: B’lue Americano!
Get this: The primary ingredient to this new cocktail is none other than B’lue Lychee. “Americano is a sweet bitter cocktail that has Campari, Sweet Vermouth, and soda water. I incorporate it with B'lue Lychee flavored water instead of using soda water to add that sweet fruity note,” he explains. “Recreating classic cocktails is very challenging because you have to make sure that the outcome will be good and appreciated by the drinker.”
The addition of B’lue Lychee really gives the cocktail a refreshing quality, making it the perfect drink for any occasion. “I created B'lue Americano for any-time-of-the-day consumption because the lychee adds a fruity note to it that makes the taste mellow but still has the bitter kick,” he says. “B'lue Americano can make your drinking session more fun.”
So, the next time you need a pick-me-up, try Cerdinia’s new take on this Italian classic. Check out the recipe below:
