Filipino-Owned Genever Has Been Named One of the Best Bars in North America

The bar's cocktails feature Filipino ingredients such as panutsa, bitter melon, pandan, calamansi, and sago.

The World's 50 Best has released the inaugural edition of North America's 50 Best Bars. The new annual ranking was announced Tuesday night in New York, and features bars in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Genever, a Filipino-owned bar located in Los Angeles' Historic Filipinotown, just made the cut at 50th spot. The bar was founded in 2018 by Roselma Samala, Christine Sumiller, and Patricia Perez with the idea of celebrating their backgrounds. With a focus on gin, Genever's cocktails feature Filipino ingredients such as panutsa, bitter melon, pandan, calamansi, and sago.

New York's Attaboy topped the ranking as the best in North America, while Mexico City establishments Handshake Speakeasy and Licorería Limatour followed at second and third. Check out the full list of North America's 50 Best Bars here.

"We commend all of the bars on the inaugural list of North America’s 50 Best Bars that are doing a stellar job invigorating the continent’s drinks scene as we emerge from what has been a very challenging time," said Mark Sansom, content director for North America's 50 Best Bars. "Hospitality is an incredibly important engine of economic recovery, and these bars’ creativity and determination demonstrate the best of our industry in North America."
