When it's the end of the workweek and we're getting all of those post-work jitters out of our system, this is the perfect time to break out our best whisky. And by that, we mean the really good kind, where we can get lost in the shuffle of good friends and even better times. We deserve this, we should remember.

Scotch whisky brand Glenfiddich is taking it a step further with a disruptive new series of single malts. This one is for the whisky sommelier and, well, for the people who know how to have fun. The Glenfiddich Grand Series hopes to reinvent our idea of celebrating with the Gran Reserva, Grand Cru, and Grande Couronne and is all about honoring the time-honored tradition of whisky indulgence during a night out.

"The Philippines has a growing whisky market," Brett Bayly, Glenfiddich ambassador for Southeast Asia, told Esquire Philippines. Bayly grew up in the Philippines and has witnessed economic growth in the country, particularly the middle class. "What we're seeing is this desire for education. When people educate, they want to share, and they want to pout themselves in a better position."

Bayly says that the Glenfiddich 12, 15, and 18, in particular, are flying off the shelves. "Because people are now realizing that they have an opportunity to educated themselves with higher-quality liquids. It's not to take anything from whatever else is out there, but it's just people thinking, 'How can I express myself through what I drink? How can I showcase where I am in life with what I drink?"

Bayly led a tasting of the Glenfiddich Grand Series at the East Ocean Palace Restaurant in Parañaque.

"From unexpected cask finishes of Caribbean rum to French cuvée and cognac casks, the Grand Series showcases our ability to experiment with aged liquid and intriguing finishes," he said. "They bring together luxury and traditional worlds in an unexpected marriage and elevating ordinary occasions to offer a true taste of opulence."

Here's a Saturday night set of Esquire whisky recommendations.

Gran Reserva

For the rebel: Gran Reserva builds to a crescendo of sweet toffee and spicy exotic warmth. Vibrant and adorned in deep amber, this thing takes us to the visions and flavors of the Caribbean.

Glenfiddich

Raised in Scotland and roused by the beautiful Carribean is Gran Reserva. This is the whisky for us rebels who just can't deal with the basic, but have respect for the tradition of the so-called "water of life." It's aged for 21 years in selected American and European oak casks and finished for six months in Caribbean Rum casks, and can be quite the complement to, let's say, drinking to the hues of the sunset.

Grand Cru

For the experimental: This single malt whisky exhibits a delicate profile, sweet and somewhat baked, with classic notes of Speyside apple and citrus. It's aged in American and European oak casks first before arriving at the French cuvée.

Grand Cru takes us to France with this unexpected, rich blend. Matured for 23 years in hand-selected oak casks, this bad boy is finished in rare French cuvée casks for six months. This makes it the first of its kind to be treated such for Glenfiddich, and should sit atop of our weekend whisky priority list.

Grande Couronne

For the king: Secured with a 26-sided gold closure and adorned with gold filigree, a bottle of Grande Couronne offers us exquisite layers of sweet toasted oak and velvety aromas of café crème, brown sugar, and soft spice. It's the piece de resistance of the Glenfiddich Grand Series.

It's called Grande Couronne (French word for crown) for a reason, folks. Glenfiddich calls it the "crowning glory" of the Glenfiddich Grand Series and deservedly so. This "ascended" single malt whisky is aged for a whopping 26 years and is finished for up to two years in rare French cognac casks. Yes, it's older than a quarter-life existential crisis. These bottles are rare, and should only be busted out during the rarest of occasions. But hey, what's stopping us from drinking this on Saturday? Nothing, really.

The Glenfiddich Gran Reserva is available in all S&R outlets in Manila and for online purchase at Boozy. To order the Glenfiddich Grand Cru and Grande Couronne, please contact William Grant & Sons representatives Spencer Ty at [email protected] or Dominique Repoquit at [email protected].
