Johnnie Walker Is Making Plastic-Free Paper Bottles For Next Year

Johnnie Walker is going plastic-free. Well, for a limited time with a release of paper bottles instead of glass. The whisky brand announced the limited-edition release through parent company Diageo early this week.

This isn't just a statement on leaving plastic behind, it's also a world's first as Diageo says it's the first-ever 100 percent plastic-free paper-based spirits bottle. Diageo managed to innovate the bottle through a partnership with Pilot Lite to launch a sustainable packaging tech company.

"We’re proud to have created this world first. We are constantly striving to push the boundaries within sustainable packaging and this bottle has the potential to be truly ground-breaking. It feels fitting that we should launch it with Johnnie Walker, a brand that has often led the way in innovation throughout its 200 years existence," says Diageo's chief sustainability officer Ewan Andrew.

The tech can even be used in every area of life as Diageo has partnered with several companies including Unilever and Pepsi. What exactly makes this paper bottle superior? It's fully recyclable from the cap to the... well, bottle. The bottle itself is even made from sustainably sourced pulp.

All that and it also comes in a sleek and cool black.

Now, we do have a few questions for Diageo. How long can it stay on a shelf before it disintegrates? Does the material change the taste of the whisky? Will we see more plastic-free paper bottles in the future?

If you're like us and wondering what whisky from a paper bottle tastes like, you'll have to wait a bit since it's being released in 2021.
