The Tasting Club Wants You To Experience Filipino Craft Gin

Gin is perhaps one of the most versatile drinks out there, and definitely one that most of us have tried at one time or another. Maybe you’ve mixed gin with powdered juice in college, or tried it with tonic at a bar. Its simplicity makes for a blank canvas for aspiring bartenders, but the process behind it is actually a little more complex than we think. Craft distilleries now use different production techniques and botanicals; talk about making something your own. 

We miss drinking out with friends as much as the next person, and sometimes, e-numans don’t really feel the same without the thrill of ordering something else other than a beer. But The Tasting Club, in partnership with Esquire Philippines, Destileria Barako, Crows Craft and Brewing Co., Santa Ana Gin, and Flavor Board is hosting a virtual tasting experience that just might be the next best thing to a real face-to-face get-together. The Filipino Craft Gin Experience happens at 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 25, 2021 via Zoom. Guests will be tasting Filipino craft gin, and will experience how this spirit will be elevated by Filipino flavors you probably never thought would go in a drink.

If you’ve never really experimented with the potential of gin in inumans past, this may be the perfect opportunity. Expect rare indigenous ingredients to be brought up, like sampaguita, blue pea flower, yukon, libas, ylang ylang, and alpinia.

While we often associate tasting profiles with drinks like whisky or wine, gin can also be citrus forward, fruity, floral, and spicy, depending on curation. The spirit can be produced via traditional distillation in copper pot still or delicate vacuum distillation, and different production techniques as well as things like medium-charred American oak barrels for maturation can be used. It’s a lot to process, but the gin and tonic demos that will be conducted at the event might just bring us a step closer to creating the perfect drink. 

The representatives will come from the distilleries themselves: Kalel Demetrio of Destileria Barako, John Joe Joseph of Crows Gins, and Aaron Goodal of Santa Ana Gin.

While our usual e-numans only include six-packs (not the kind we sometimes wish to have) of beer and maybe a bag of chips, attendees will also receive their own especially curated charcuterie board of cheeses and cold cuts by Flavor Board to pair with the selection of six samples of Filipino gin and Fentimans Connoisseur Tonic Water and other spices. It’s definitely an elevated way to enjoy a drink on a Saturday night. Aside from tasting and mixing drinks with the perfect munchies, you can expect to have a safe night out experience, maybe even bragging rights when you get the hang of making the perfect g&t yourself.
