Jollibee's Chickenjoy Is the 'Best Fried Chicken in America'
Mama, we're making it in America—or at least our chicken is. Jollibee's iconic Chickenjoy is starting to gain more and more fans overseas. Global food website Eater.com named the "juicy-licious, crispy-licious" Chickenjoy “the best chain fried chicken in America," edging out more than 15 global brands in the process.
"The Filipino fried chicken chain made its U.S. debut in 1998 and has since developed a cult following for its chickenjoy, what the chain calls its bone-in fried chicken, as well as its meat-topped spaghetti (though that won’t be a factor for judging here)," Eater.com wrote.
In the final round, Jollibee Chickenjoy bested Bonchon half-and-half. Eater.com Special Projects Editor Lesley Suter credited Chickenjoy's "subtly seasoned skin" and how the chicken itself was "satisfyingly light, flavorful in a ‘tastes like chicken’ sort of way, and supremely moist.”
She acknowledged Jollibee's signature gravy, as well. The editor noted that it "is more than just an optional dunk; it completes the dish, gelatinous in a way I can only describe as naughty, while proudly showing its Filipino colors with a hefty dose of sugar."
Jollibee Group’s President for Philippine Brands in North America Maribeth dela Cruz welcomed the recognition.
“We are honored that our beloved Chickenjoy has been named as among the best fried chicken in the US,” she shared. "At our core, Jollibee is all about serving great-tasting food and bringing the joy of eating to everyone, and we are glad that more and more people around the world are discovering the joy of our crispylicious, juicylicious Chickenjoy.”
The Jollibee Group's Philippine brands in North America consist of Jollibee, Chowking, and Red Ribbon. Its latest in New York, Jollibee Times Square, will officially open on August 18.
With 83 locations in North America and more than 1,500 restaurants worldwide, Jollibee's global presence continues to expand.
