Most people are familiar with the eye-popping and mouthwatering buffet selection at Sofitel Philippine Plaza’s Spiral, but what many don’t know is that the hotel offers a more affordable and infinitely more romantic version of the spread. You just need to go outside.

Enjoy a cool drink while gazing at the sunset at Sofitel's Sunset Bar

Sofitel's Sunset Bar Buffet happens every Friday and Saturday

Sunset Bar is the hotel’s al fresco dining outlet facing Manila Bay. It’s been there almost as long as the hotel itself has been, although it recently underwent some extensive renovation and redesign. On regular nights guests can kick back with a beer or cocktail while enjoying a view of the manicured tropical gardens designed by pioneering Filipino landscape architect Ildefonso P. Santos, as well as Sofitel’s one-of-a-kind lagoon-shaped pool.

On Fridays and Saturdays however, the hotel transforms the bar into something like “Spiral Light”: a buffet spread offering a live grill station, soups, salads, appetizers and dessert, all with a spectacular view of the sunset. It’s the perfect place to take your special lady friend to celebrate an anniversary, a “monthsary,” or even just the fact that you made it to another weekend.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of dining at Spiral—arguably the biggest and best buffet restaurant in the country—you’ll know how overwhelming the choices can get. At Sunset Bar’s barbecue buffet, the selection is edited to include just the basics, which are no less filling and grand. Grilled specialties include lamb shawarma, chicken liver skewers, tandoori, satay and chicken and beef kebabs. There’s also a lechon here, if you’re up for it. Depending on the catch of the day, you can expect seafood, too, such as shrimp, prawns, and scallops. Tell the servers how you want it done and they'll deliver it to your table piping hot and with your choice of dipping sauce.

Pair your mains with a soup or tossed salad, or freshly baked bread. Wash it all down with unlimited local beers, iced tea and wine, plus a choice of three cocktails. And for dessert, the buffet offers an array of indulgent cakes and pastries, as well as local kakanin such as sapin-sapin, ice cream, a halo-halo station and fresh fruits.

There's also a selection of mouthwatering desserts

As if all that weren’t enough, guests will get a kick out of Sofitel’s choice for entertainment: a tradtional Filipino dance troupe performing familiar local dances such as the tinikling, pandango sa ilaw, maglalatik and others.

Couples and friends are spoiled for choice when it comes to going out in Manila, but how many other bars or restaurants offer a dizzying selection of grilled favorites and unlimited drinks set against a stunning backdrop of one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world? If the idea is to impress, Sofitel’s Sunset Bar is hard to top.

Sofitel's Sunset Buffet is available Fridays and Saturdays and is priced at P2700 net
