Toyo Eatery Receives a Miele Award for Championing Filipino Food

The organizers of Asia's 50 Best Restaurants have confirmed what we've known for almost two years now: Toyo Eatery at Karrivin Plaza can run with many of the best restaurants out there. The organization has appointed Chef Jordy Navarra's culinary playground the Miele One to Watch award, a prize given to a restaurant that missed the 50 best list, but is "identified as the rising star of the region."
“Toyo Eatery impresses us by taking inspiration from everyday local ingredients and recipes and bringing them to the level of culinary excellence with passion, expertise and a progressive approach,” says Mario Miranda, regional managing director Asia at Miele, in a press release. “This same attitude involving constant improvement and innovation are part of Miele’s ‘Immer Besser’ brand philosophy."
In an interview with SPOT.ph prior to opening, Navarra explained that his brand of cooking reflects the Filipino spirit and culture more than a literal interpretation of Filipino food. There's no lechon or liempo or chicken inasal. The "Bangus," for example, is a curious take on -silog, with its melty milkfish belly and seasoned rice that lashes out a salty flavor to balance the mild fish. "We use the culture of Filipinos eating," he explained.
Toyo Eatery will officially be awarded on March 27 in Macao, two days before the restaurant's second anniversary.
In December 2017, Navarra also opened a second restaurant, Panaderya Toyo, which spun off from the cult following of Toyo's tocino bread.
Toyo Eatery is at Karrivin Plaza, Chino Roces Extension, Makati City.
