This Former Filipina Flight Attendant Switched Careers To Help In The Fight Against COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has really taken a toll on the economy, leaving a huge number of Filipinos unemployed. According to reportr, in April 2020, the Philippine Statistics Authority measured unemployment at 17.7 percent—resulting in 7.3 million jobless adults.

In the travel industry, Madel Thelia Lucena, was one of those affected. She was a flight attendant for a local airline but unfortunately, she got laid off due to the ongoing health crisis. She said, "Ang dami naming na-lay off. Until now umiiyak, until now hindi maka-move on from that. That was our dream—to be flying, enjoying yung luxury life as a flight attendant. And then nawala bigla."

But luckily, a promising opportunity came her way. After being laid off, she went back to her hometown in Palawan to be with family. That's when she got the message that the testing centers in the area were hiring medical technologists. Carrying a degree in BS Medical Laboratory Science, it was a field that Madel is completely knowledgeable in. "Kailangan talaga nila. They are in need [of] medical technologists, kasi wala ritong school [para sa] course na 'yon. Ako nasuwerte rin, na med tech na ako, nandito na ako."

Madel shared that she was hesitant at first, given the health risks and it took quite some time before she finally decided to switch careers. "Yung decision-making ko ang tagal but siyempre, at the end of the day, it's still my profession. May oath ako na ti-nake na I have to help other people, the community right now."
