Slater Young’s Advice About Work-Life Blending Hits Close To Home

As a guy who wears many hats, Slater Young himself wonders where he gets the time, energy, and motivation to constantly tend to his day-to-day commitments.

Imagine having to juggle a real estate venture (Montesseraz Prime), a lightweight walling business (Liteblock), an in-demand social media and YouTube presence, and a thriving Spotify podcast on a regular basis. These are, of course, on top of his responsibilities as a husband and first-time dad, which, while highly rewarding, are in itself a tall order.

“Sometimes, I really do feel like I’m being pulled from all directions,” Slater admits. “I’ve been spending a lot of time on the phone or in front of a computer, especially during the pandemic. I wish this wasn’t the case, but it’s just the nature of our work, and it’s tough to unplug.”

Because of this, he is no longer a stranger to the concept of “tech pain”—those minor but highly inconvenient aches and discomforts one gets after being hunched in front of a device for hours on end. “My neck has been bothering me a lot. Some days, I wake up with aches and pains,” he adds.

Sore back, neck strains, wrist pain—Slater is hardly alone in his sentiment. An international survey made last year reported that nearly two-thirds of work-from-home employees have been suffering from tech pain as a result of poor homeworking practices. The stories are more or less the same: Working under less-than-ideal ergonomic conditions will sooner or later lead to a lot of discomforts.

That said, Slater is not one to give in to the pitfalls of the work-from-home life. He knows that his physical and mental health are the two things that hold everything together, and when the going gets tough, everything else has to take a backseat. This is where regular exercise, mental health breaks, a routine change, and having a go-to pain reliever come into play.

“When working from home, the key is to establish a work schedule and have a separate workplace,” he says. “I used to work in our dining area, but I have since converted our guest bedroom into a home office—this made such a huge difference, productivity-wise.”

He adds: “I feel lucky to have my family with me, especially my wife. Work-wise, we are basically going through the same thing, so we always encourage each other to take breaks, pursue our hobbies, and take care of our bodies. Trust me, taking a break and performing deep stretches really help.

And as for his choice of pain reliever? “Ibuprofen (Medicol Advance 400) helps me get through days when I’m not feeling a hundred percent,” Slater points out. “I discovered it only last year, and it has been my go-to brand ever since. Having a pain reliever that starts to work in as fast as five minutes allows me to plow through my busy day and meet deadlines.

These simple yet underrated practices, along with his desire to rise above pain, are what motivates Slater to strive to be his best self, which explains why he’s a big advocate of Ibuprofen (Medicol Advance)'s #BestMe campaign.

For me, it’s all about being the best version of yourself; you have to be deliberate in knowing what it is that makes you just that,” he explains. “Is it wealth? Is it being a great athlete? Is it having a great family? There are so many inspirations to draw from, but one thing I’m sure of is good health comes first and foremost."
