Carlos Yulo Makes a Comeback With Gold and Silver Medals at Gymnastics World Championships

ICYMI, Carlos Yulo is a world champ once more.

Carlos “Caloy” Yulo made a fierce comeback at the 2021 Artistic Gymnastics World Championship after bagging the gold in the men’s vault finals and the silver in men’s parallel bar finals on October 24 in Kitakyushu, Japan.

Just a few years ago in 2019, Yulo won the gold medal in the men’s floor exercise finals, and in 2018, he bagged the bronze medal in the men’s floor exercise finals. Yulo made history at the 2019 games for becoming the first Filipino to be named a world gymnastics champion, and he did it again this year.

After securing both a gold and a silver at the 2021 World Championship, Yulo is now also the first Filipino to win multiple world championship medals in one tournament.

Yulo’s victories were no doubt a morale boost for the 21-year-old gymnast who was unable to secure a medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The loss was an emotional moment for Yulo, who shared that he wept in his hotel room after his performance. But it’s clear a redemption arc is in play as Yulo reclaims his world champion standing—and prepares for Paris 2024.
