The Biggest Fight in Years Is Officially Happening
The singularly anticipated fight between boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and UFC champion Conor McGregor is now official, according to Yahoo! News. While McGregor made his name as a mixed martial artist, on August 26 he will face off on a boxing card against Mayweather, who is a career 49-0—all in boxing bouts. Mayweather had claimed he was retired, but perhaps the money that's earned him his nickname turned his head and got him back in the ring: According to Yahoo!, each man could make "in excess of $100 million" thanks to a lavish pay-per-view contract with Showtime.
So far, the bookies seem to think McGregor is more likely to take home money than a victory. He's an elite MMA fighter, but has never boxed in either amateur or professional competition. On the flip side, Mayweather is considered the greatest boxer of his generation. The line from Westgate sports book in Las Vegas has Mayweather at a -1000 favorite, while McGregor is a plus-650.
