Nesthy Petecio Wins Silver For Team Philippines at the Olympics

History is being made every day at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Nesthy Petecio wins the silver medal at the women’s featherweight finals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after losing to Japan’s Sena Irie. The 29-year-old Petecio was defeated by Irie in a 5-0 decision, but the Filipino boxer is still taking home a silver medal from her first-ever Olympics.

Nesthy now joins the ranks of boxers Anthony Villanueva and Mansueto Velasco and weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, the only other silver medalists from the Philippines. Diaz won the country’s first-ever gold earlier this week.

Petecio’s medal is the Philippines’ second at the Tokyo games, making 2020 the country’s second multi-medal finish in 89 years.

Three more Filipinos have a shot at joining Nesthy and Hidilyn as boxers Eumir Marcial and Carlo Paalam still have a shot at gold while EJ Obiena will compete in the men’s pole vault finals later today.

Just a few years ago, Nesthy almost quit boxing after suffering a major loss at the 2018 Asian Games. However, she persevered and returned with a knockout performance at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in 2019 where she placed first.
