It was a normal flight for the Philippine Airlines cabin crew, until Jose Mari Chan stepped on board the PAL flight bound from Manila to Japan. There are high profile personalities, then there’s Jose Mari Chan—the Filipino father of Christmas, a title the social media universe has honored him with though the singer himself has said otherwise. It’s not often you encounter the Filipino equivalent to Santa Claus. At 74, JMC is still the soundtrack for the holidays in the Philippines.

Remember the Grandparents Day McDonald’s advertisement where JMC and McDonald’s Big Cheese swapped lives for a few minutes? It warmed the hearts of everyone, and had us convinced the two were related (or separated at birth).

The chances of being on the same flight as Jose Mari Chan? Slim. The chances of being on the next flight, on the same plane, on the same day? Improbable. But it happened, and just a few months shy of Christmas no less.
