A small town by the name of Salemi in Sicily is auctioning off its houses for a price that’s cheaper than a meal at Jollibee. A historic home in the middle of a picturesque Italian town? It sounds almost too good to be true.
The catch? Most of the one-euro-homes are dilapidated, but renovation costs will hardly go over the price for property in Italy. The mayor of Salemi, Domenico Venuti, hopes the auction will revive Salemi to the bustling Sicilian town it was before a 1948 earthquake chased residents away.
The underpopulated town is now looking for new residents willing to take on these historic buildings and become a part of the town. All the infrastructure, electric grids, and sewage have been updated, so all you’d have to do is add the finishing touches to these old homes, some of which are over four centuries old. The houses were built using sandstone from nearby caves.
Now talk about a building with character.
Renovation costs aside, it would be priceless to settle down in a historic Italian town that looks like it still belongs in the Renaissance period. Now we just need to know if the town offers visas?
