Not every country is kind to the LGBTQ+ community. And the reality is, not all LGBTQ+ travelers are afforded the luxury of safety wherever they go. It's just another sign of the daily struggles of the community, having to always consider if the environments they enter will oppress them or treat them equally. Thankfully, the Gay Travel Index by Spartacus has ranked the best and worst countries for LGBTQ+ tourists to visit based on the state of equality, acceptance, and understanding for the queer communities in these nations.
Based on the map below, Western regions like the U.S.A., Europe, and Australia are safest for queer travelers, while North Africa, the Middle East, and all of Russia might make you second guess visiting.

According to their research, here are the best countries for LGBTQ+ travelers around the world.

Meanwhile, the most dangerous places for LGBTQ+ travelers are:

Surprisingly, the Philippines ranked somewhere in the middle at 117th place, driven down by the lack of solid legislation that protects the lives and livelihoods of the LGBT community. Of course, the index did not take into consideration cultural realities, like the Philippines’ large LGBT community, and focused mainly on quantifiable metrics.
The rankings were based on: anti-discrimination legislation, marriage and civil partnership laws, adoption laws, transgender rights, intersex/third option availability, equal age of consent, state of “conversion therapy,” LGBT marketing, religious influences, HIV travel restrictions, anti-gay laws, legality of homosexuality, legality of pride, hostility of locals, prosecutions, murders, and death sentences.
