For residents of Metro Manila, it’s easy to grow jaded about the place we call home. After all, there’s the ever-growing traffic, unreliable transport system, and pollution to contend with. But a new travel book called Manila Manila and More seeks to remind us that there’s a lot to love about the “Pearl of the Orient.”

If you’re stuck wondering what else there is to do here apart from hit the mall, this book is brimming with answers written by locals who know and love Manila best. Comprehensive neighborhood guides include the best places to eat and stay, unique places to shop, and museums and galleries to visit.

In fact, Manila Manila and More puts the spotlight on the metro’s vibrant food and arts scene, including hidden gems even Manileños might not know about. The entire book is an invitation to rediscover our own city. It makes no attempts to whitewash Manila’s flaws, but it encourages readers to appreciate its eccentric charm.

Of course, the soul of a city is in its people. What sets Manila Manila and More apart from other guidebooks is that it includes insightful essays by the likes of Carlos Celdran, Margarita Forés, Marika Constantino, and Nicole Curato. It also has interviews with culture and fashion icons like Pepe Diokno, Pia Wurtzbach, Maria Taniguchi, Liz Uy, and Geraldine Roman.

Ultimately, this book is a love letter to the metropolis and its colorful character. As Carlos Celdran writes, “Manila can be chaotic and spiritual, dirty and divine, gritty and gorgeous all at once. If you don’t find beauty and poetry here, you will never find it anywhere.”

If you’re interested in grabbing your own copy of Manila Manila and More, join the book launch tomorrow from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at Grae Studio, First United Building, Escolta, Manila. There will be a talk by the book’s designers, Serious Studio, and a panel discussion to be hosted by editor Raymond Ang. Copies of the book will be available for P395. Afterwards, it will be out on newsstands, bookstores, and supermarkets nationwide.
