Who Is Cardinal Jose Advincula, Manila's New Archbishop?

On March 25, Pope Francis appointed Cardinal Jose Advincula, 68, as Manila’s new archbishop. Advincula replaces Cardinal Chito Tagle, who now serves as an administrator of the Vatican Central Bank and leads the influential Propaganda Fide, the Church’s arm for spreading the faith.

But who exactly is Cardinal Advincula and why was he chosen for the job?

Who is Cardinal Jose Advincula?

Cardinal Advincula is one of the country’s most respected figures when it comes to Canon Law, the body of rules governing the Catholic Church. The highlights of his tenure as bishop and cardinal are his promotion of the family and protection of human rights, both of which could have played a role when Pope Francis elevated him to cardinal in November 2020.

Pope Francis always appoints cardinals and bishops to certain positions based on their track record, virtues, and stand on certain issues. He does this to ensure that anyone he appoints has values aligned with his own agenda for church reform. To some observers, an appointment by Francis is tantamount to saying, “This one is a good shepherd. He will take good care of the flock.”

Cardinal Advincula studied psychology at the De La Salle University then took up Canon Law at the University of Santo Tomas. He officially became a “canon lawyer” when he obtained his licentiate in Rome’s Angelicum.

Cardinal Advincula is just like an ordinary man.

Prior to the pandemic, Advincula could be seen jogging around Intramuros or Luneta. According to the website of the Archbishop of Manila, Advincula would jog before turning up for very long meetings with other bishops of the CBCP (Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines).

But there are some ordinary things he cannot do these days anymore: taking long walks instead of riding cars, hiking on mountains and trails, and going out on adventure treks with seminarians.

Despite his age (Cardinal Advincula turns 69 on March 30), the prelate is deemed very fit and physically active.

Advincula was Trained by Cardinal Sin.

Advincula is one of the few bishops today who had a close relationship with the late Cardinal Sin. According to Joy Rojas who writes for My Pope Philippines, Cardinal Sin (then Fr. Jaime Sin) was his Latin teacher at the St. Pius X Seminary in Roxas City.

Cardinal Advincula is from a family of priests.

Cardinal Advincula has brothers and cousins who became priests. His older brother is the late Monsignor Ben Advincula, while his younger brother is Fr. Neil Peter Advincula, a parish priest in their hometown of Capiz.

His first cousin on his mother’s side is Fr. Antonio Fuerte Arinquin, also based in Capiz. His mother’s brother also became a priest: Monsignor Siforiano Furte. Another first cousin of his mother is the late Monsignor Ed Fuerte.
