Pokemon, Star Wars, MCU: Here Are the 10 All-Time Biggest Media Franchises in the World

For all its pomp and circumstance, Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe is still nowhere near the biggest and most valuable franchise in the world. That title belongs to none other than the Japanese mega-media franchise Pokemon.
According to Statista, the 25-year-old Pokemon franchise has sold over $100 billion worth of games and goods, making it the single most valuable media franchise in history. They really took “Gotta catch ‘em all” seriously. From over 1,000 TV show episodes, countless video games, and an undying video card business, Pokemon has been the best media investment of the last 25 years.
Following Pokemon is another Japanese mega-media franchise: Hello Kitty, which has generated over $84.5 billion in revenues, and Winnie the Pooh, which has banked $80.3 billion. Disney’s Mickey Mouse ties for third place with Winnie the Pooh, followed by two other Disney franchises: Star Wars and the Disney Princesses, with $68.7 billion and $46.4 billion.
Anpanman, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Super Mario, and Harry Potter close the top 10, with Disney accounting for five of the top 10 franchises.
In total, the world’s top 10 media franchises have generated over a whopping $600 million in revenues, proving once and for all that there’s no greater economic asset than a very loyal, if not slightly nerdy, fandom.
