DOTr Says P1.1 Billion Nationwide Bike Lane Network Almost Complete

Good news for cyclists.

About 93 percent of the government’s ambitious P1.1 billion nationwide bicycle lane network has been completed, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.

A total of 497 kilometers of bike lanes have been completed this month, DOtr Secretary Arthur Tugade reported. The plan is to complete 535 kilometers before the end of the year. Physical separators and road signages will be deployed as well as pavement markings for the completed bike lane network.

Some 313 kilometers worth P801.83 million in disbursements of the completed bike lanes are in the National Capital Region, 129 kilometers worth P150 million in Metro Cebu, and 55 kilometers worth 145.37 million in Metro Davao. The DOTr said it is targeting to inaugurate completed bike lanes in all three areas within the month.

“It is in fulfilling the desire of the public, and commuters, the Department of Transportation has been implementing projects geared towards that end,” Tugade said. "We intend to provide commuters with access to faster, and efficient means of mass transportation; and to open infrastructure for active transportation such as walking and cycling.”

The DOTr said it is promoting active transport for the citizenry due to the limited capacity and supply of transportation in the country.
