DITO Telecommunity Has Launched Commercially in Visayas and Mindanao

DITO Telecommunity Corporation, the country’s third major player in the telecommunications industry, recently announced its entry into the market by providing free call, text, and broadband services to 3000 frontliners across ten different areas in Visayas and Mindanao. This announcement was the highlight of DITO’s commercial launch at a virtual press conference held on March 8, 2021. At the launch event was Dennis A. Uy, Chairman and CEO, along with other top DITO executives.

In his opening statement, DITO Chief Technology Officer Rodolfo Santiago recounted how, at the beginning, many doubted the fledgling telco initiative. However, he also said that just a few weeks before the commercial launch, DITO’s services exceeded the required benchmarks of the first government mandated audit.

The audit findings showed that DITO demonstrated an average speed of 85.9Mbps for 4G and 507.5Mbps for 5G with a population coverage of more than 37 percent—important indicators that point to the company’s readiness to fulfill its mandate of bringing world-class connectivity to every Filipino.

Santiago continued: “As we begin our commercial launch, all I can say is that there is more work to be done,” he said. “Together, we will succeed and make a difference in transforming the landscape of Philippine telecommunications.”

For his part, DICT Secretary Gregorio Honasan II, who was also at the launch event, stressed the importance of elevating the Philippines’ telecommunications industry, so it may be at par with the rest of the world. He also argued that DITO’s arrival has spurred investments and infrastructure spending in the telecom sector.

Also at DITO’s launch was Adel Tamano, DITO Chief Adminsitrative Officer. “DITO was born out of a spirit of nation-building,” he said. Tamano said that the rationale for a third telco was to serve the underserved and to provide Filipinos with a better option. “This is the genesis of this project, the origins of why DITO was born. We are here to serve our consumers, to provide world-class telecommunications services to Filipinos.”

Lastly, Dennis A. Uy, DITO’s Chairman and CEO of DITO explained the decision to start with Visayas and Mindanao, and hinted at a near future roll-out for Luzon. “In the following weeks, you will see us rise in various areas of the country,” he said. “But today, March 8, we first give back to where it all began. “With this gesture, we send the message to the people of the Philippines wherever they may be, that DITO is more than just a telco. We are here to serve, and, in this manner, we want the entire country to know na, dito na kami, dito na tayo, and magkita-kita tayo diyan very soon.”
