DOT and Concentrix Team Up to Provide 10,000 BPO Jobs For Displaced Tourism Workers
The pandemic has caused widespread national unemployment and underemployment. One of the worst-hit industries has been the tourism sector. Once a lifeline for the economy, tourism is now facing unprecedented challenges as hotels, airlines, and cruises struggle to stay afloat and thousands if not millions of workers in tourism, from flight attendants to hotel staff, try to survive without work or pay.

It’s an issue that’s kept many awake at night, but the Department of Tourism (DOT) may have found a way to alleviate the financial struggles of many tourism workers. In partnership with Concentrix Philippines, a leading business process outsourcing (BPO) in the country, DOT will be making over 10,000 jobs in the BPO industry available for displaced workers in the tourism industry.
These new jobs include: customer service representatives, technical support representatives, frontline/specialists, supervisors, trainers, and managers. There are also jobs open in the following fields: human resources, recruitment, finance, IT, and marketing.
“The DOT is taking this as a timely blessing for affected tourism workers. Our tour guides and frontline service providers certainly have an edge, especially those who speak foreign languages, as they find work in the BPO industry while tourism operations are still limited. Part-time jobs are also available, and have work-from-home arrangements in light of the new normal,” said Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, DOT secretary.
The BPO industry might be drastic change for tourism workers, but it offers a temporary source of income until the tourism industry gets back on its feet. Considering the nature of their careers, many tourism workers are already proficient in English and communicating with people.
“The skillset of the people in the hospitality industry are very powerful for us because of their ability to interact with foreign nationals and their customer service orientation,” said Concentrix Philippines vice president Amit Jagga said.
The job fair will take place on September 22, 24, 29, and October 1, for those in Luzon; September 17, 18 and October for those in Visayas; and September 15 and 16 for those in Mindanao. Hiring should take less than 24 hours, and all the interviews and assessments will be online. For more details and updates, keep an eye on the Facebook pages of the DOT and Concentrix.
