Filipino Startup Edukasyon Produces 'Spin-Off' Edutech, Edge Tutor
Filipino edutech Edukasyon.ph just announced the “spin-off” of Edge Tutor International, Inc., a tutoring platform started in 2022 that has since gone global. Popular among parents, Edge Tutor connects students to virtual tutors who are all licensed, certified, and trained educators.
Edge Tutor will be led by its new CEO Henry Motte-Muñoz, founder and former CEO of Edukasyon.ph.
"We are confident that, under [Motte-Munoz’s] leadership, Edge Tutor International will continue to grow and provide high-quality tutoring services to learners around the world,” said Grace David, CEO of Edukasyon.ph.
Founded after the pandemic, Edge Tutor was originally built to connect students to private tutors around the Philippines. The platform filled in the gaps in the formal education system and gave teachers an additional stream of income. The same year it launched, Edge Tutor went international, expanding to 20 countries across the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. The platform claims growth of 50 percent quarter on quarter.
Claiming growth of 50 percent quarter or quarter, Edge Tutor is supported by Edukasyon.ph’s backers, which include Foxmont Capital Partners, First Asia Venture Capital, KSR Ventures, Lorinet Foundation, Edulab Capital Partners, Obunsha Ventures, Bisk Ventures, Taylor’s Education, French Partners, and Mustard Seed.
“Helping learners achieve their full potential through education has always been our vision,” said Motte-Muñoz. “Edge Tutor supplements the learning that Edukasyon.ph has provided for almost a decade now, and we are excited to build this community of educators together.”
With over 1,100 licensed teachers trained in evidence-based methodology and strategies for online teaching, Edge Tutor takes pride in its rigorous screening process. Only three percent of teacher applicants are accepted, and all must be licensed and attend regular training sessions for upskilling.
“In partnership with the world’s most trusted names in online learning, Edge Tutor can provide career opportunities for teachers to connect with one another, share teaching tips, and receive feedback,” said Edge Tutor Vice President of Operations Cecilia Calvo-Lewis.
Tutors on Edge Tutor can earn as much as P59,000 per month for English and Math tutoring full-time. Meanwhile, A part-time tutor can earn up to P25,000 per month, in contrast to the P27,000 average monthly wage of full-time teachers in the Philippines.
On the student’s side, the monthly rate for four 25-minute sessions a month is as low as P1,400, while the package for eight 50-minute sessions a month can cost P4,800.
