This Former Auto Industry Exec Started Her Own Business Selling Premium Meats

Johnas Soriano-Tanchoco worked for over 10 years in the corporate world before she decided to take the plunge and start her own business. Most recently, she worked as the marketing director for the local dealer and distributor of ultra-luxury automotive brands. 

“I was once in that zone where it was difficult to make a choice (between) leaving your comfortable job or starting something new where you don’t know what’s in store for you,” she says. “I took the risk and trusted myself. And for me, that’s the first thing that you should start with when building your confidence.”

When the pandemic hit and the lockdown happened in early 2020, the 37-year-old was given the opportunity to distribute premium meats to family and friends. Many restaurants were forced to close, particularly fine dining outlets that served steaks, which was exactly what Tanchoco was offering. She realized that this was an opportunity to encourage people who normally went out to enjoy a fine steak to cook it themselves in the comfort of their own home. This was the beginning of Let’s Meat Trading.

“This is the purpose of Let’s Meat: to help you enjoy your usual fine dining at home,” she says.

Premium imported meats 

Let’s Meat imports all of its products from some of the top meat-suppling countries in the world. From Japan, there’s Wagyu Cubes and A5 Saga Japanese Wagyu, the finest meat from cattle raised in the Saga prefecture and is distinguished by its beautiful, fine-grained marbling known as tsuya-sashi or glossy marbling. 

From the U.S.A., they offer US Angus Premium Choice Beef, which is graded by the USDA and is among the top five percent of all USA meat. The 1953 Brand, meanwhile, comes from Brazil and is at the top one percent of that country’s beef production. There’s also Brazilian Grass Fed Beef.

Finally, Let’s Meat also has Australian Beef from Down Under.

Tanchoco says the current bestseller are the steaks, primarily the US Angus Premium Choice Beef and the Brazilian GrassFed, which seems to support her assumption that more people are choosing to enjoy their fine pieces of meat at home.

Initially, the budding entrepreneur started selling her products online, and promoted it through social media like Facebook and Instagram. However, she says Let’s Meat products are now also available in All Day Supermarkets.

“Our biggest client for now is All Day Supermarket, but we definitely want to expand our reach,” Tanchoco says.

And speaking of expansion, she says her small company is continuing to develop new product offerings for its customers.  While most of its products currently focus on beef, Let’s Meat will soon launch Smoked Pork BBQ Ribs for pork lovers. 

“We want to be part of your every celebration and provide you options of the best meat products that would cater to your needs,” she says.

Tanchoco believes there is no such thing as “overnight success” in business.

“We have to give more than our 100 percent in order to make things work but we should also know that things might not always go as planned, so we should know how to shift and act on it right away,” she says. “The pandemic period is a very challenging time for all entrepreneurs, but Filipinos are known to be resilient and can overcome whatever comes our way. Having the right attitude should be our strength to keep us going.”

After years working a regular job, Tanchoco is now recalibrating and doing her best as a business owner. She says that others who are thinking of running their own enterprise should be prepared for any eventuality.

“Make sure to trust yourself and keep in mind that you can do it,” she says. “It might not be a walk in the park, but whatever obstacles you’ll face along the way, it will definitely make you stronger and a better entrepreneur. Lastly, don’t forget to pray for His guidance and everything else will follow.”
