Saudi Arabia Will Soon Open 'Extreme' Theme Park at Sea

Theme parks are a dime a dozen these days, but we haven't seen one that’s based on oil platforms located out at sea. Until now.
Saudi Arabia has announced plans to open what it says is the world’s first tourism destination on offshore platforms. “The Rig” will be located in the Arabian Gulf and spans area of about 1,500 square meters. It’s a project of the country’s Public Investment Fund and part of its strategy to “strengthen its international entertainment and tourism offerings.”
The Rig will feature at least three hotels with a total of 800 rooms, 11 restaurants, and a host of entertainment options, including theme park rides like a roller coaster and Ferris wheel, and extreme sports such as bungee jumping, board and base jumping, and jetskiing. The park will also offer undersea dining, live shows, and more.
The location itself is accessible via ferry, yacht, cruise, or helicopter.
The Saudi Arabia PIF also ensures “the sustainable preservation of the environment in the project’s vicinity,” by following “leading global standards and best practices, further supporting the Kingdom’s broader efforts on environmental protection.”
No word yet on when exactly The Rig will open, but the PIF says the project is in line with its 2021-2025 strategy to drive innovation in Saudi Arabia’s tourism and entertainment sectors.
