The Philippines Had the Most Growth in Shopping Apps Usage in Southeast Asia

The continuing increase in online shopping activity in the Philippines is undeniable. And, it's become even more apparent due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to iPrice, we've had the highest growth in shopping apps usage across Southeast Asia.

The group's map of e-commerce report, made in collaboration with App Annie and SimilarWeb, says during the second quarter of the year, the Philippines increased use of shopping apps by 53 percent—besting Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore.
“The Philippines is known to survive with cash-based transactions and brick-and-mortar stores, but perhaps its inevitable adaptation to COVID-19 will allow the country’s digital world to catch up to its more developed Southeast Asian neighbors. E-Commerce players then now have a responsibility to keep encouraging this rising trend, while emerging local merchants are now presented with more potential opportunities,” the report said.
We still have a lot of catching up to do, however. The report says Indonesia and Singapore are far ahead due to the inaccessibility or e-commerce and digital services for many in the country. But, Filipinos' gradual adaptation is evident. Here are more numbers that prove that point: 44 percent of Filipinos between the ages of 35 and 44 years old purchased more online during COVID-19, with an average spend of P1,311 each month.
