Love it or hate it, there’s no denying the impact of Starbucks on modern culture here in the Philippines and across the world. The coffee chain founded in Seattle, Washington in the U.S. in 1971 has since become a global behemoth, with branches in six of seven continents, and at least one out at sea (onboard the Allure of the Seas cruise ship).
Here are a few statistics and facts about Starbucks compiled by WallStreetZen:
1| Number of stores
As of the end of fiscal year 2020, Starbucks reported having 32,660 stores around the world. By July 27, 2021, the number has gone up to 33,295. Of that number, 16,637 or 51 percent, are company-operated, while the rest (16,023) were licensed (or franchised).
2| Countries with the most number of Starbucks stores
With around 8,941 branches, Starbucks’ home country of the U.S. is the runaway winner of the country with the most number of stores. China is second with 4,704; Japan with 1,464; Canada with 1,159; and the U.K. with 288. The Philippines is at number 11 with 397 as of 2019.
3| Stores opened vs stores closed
In fiscal year 2020, Starbucks opened 1,117 company-operated and 901 licensed stores, for a total of 2,018. Meanwhile, in the same period, it also closed 310 company operated and 304 licensed stores, for total store closures of 614.
4| Customer demographics
Citing date from FinancesOnline, WallStreetZen says 33.78 percent of Starbucks customers are between 18 to 29 years old, while 30.04 percent are between 39 to 49 years old. The remaining 21.05 percent are between 50 to 64 years old.
5| Market share
Of the 37,274 branded coffee stores in the U.S. as of the third quarter of 2019, 14,875 were under the Starbucks name, enough to capture 39.9 percent of the coffee shop market share. Dunkin’ was at second place with 26.16 percent. The JAB group, which owns brands such as Panera, Peet’s, and Caribou was at third place with 12.71 percent.
6| Revenues
In fiscal year 2020, Starbucks reported revenues of $23.518 billion. About 61 percent of this, or $14.338 billion, came from beverage sales, food accounted for 16.15 percent (about $3.799 billion), while 22.88 percent or $5.381 billion came from other merchandise sales.
7| Employee count
At the end of fiscal year 2020, Starbucks had a total of 349,000 employees. About 228,000 of them are based in the U.S., with the remaining 121,000 spread out across its many international branches.
